Journal 63

3-22-10; 10:52 PM

So, I'm about to be on my way out shortly, but I thought I'd throw a few last little tidbits about the night up online!

Shortly before I left home for the John Donne, I got a call from Pete, asking me if I could pick up a Birthday Card for him at all, on the way to the bar. Seems it was his boss' birthday.

I had NO idea where to find such a thing.

But, I said I'd try!

So, on my way out the door, I asked my host dad if he knew where to find such a thing (completely getting the wrong word for "card" in the process) -- and he told me "at a bookstore," and proceeded to list a few places that were all a bit farther off than I cared to go…

So I steeled myself to say, "Sorry!" to Pete, and went on my way to the Metro.

*THEN!* I remembered, that on my way to buy my aforementioned "Bubble Chocolate," I found a little "bookstore" cubicle! I figured, "Hey, it's worth a shot," and popped into the store.

Well, "Ask, and ye shall receive," as it's been said -- the man in the store *did* have birthday cards! Most of them were covered in glitter, and one of them even had a picture from a place I'd been in China -- but I managed to get one that was full of congratulations/nice things for a boss, and I just wrote "Happy Birthday" in it, for Pete.

Of course, because I hadn't really been expecting to buy anything, I didn't have all that much money on me…

Somehow or other, however, I appear to inspire lots of trust and feelings of goodwill, even despite the language barrier, and the shop owner was just going to let me pay for one, and come back later to pay for the rest!!!

I told him that I could just buy the one card, and if he could just save the other cards I wanted, I would return when I had money -- but he just told me to take them with me, saying, "I believe you," [that I would come back to pay.]

I did have enough to pay for a second one, so I said, "No, at least let me pay for this other one," and so he did.

I thanked him about a thousand times, and set out on my way, marveling at how all those little things fall into place.

"Hey look, a bookstore!" --

"Can you buy me a card?" --

"Where do you get birthday cards at?" --

"At bookstores." --

"Oh yeah, I saw a bookstore!" --

"Do you have birthday cards?" --

"Why, yes!" --

"Do you have something for a Boss?" --

"Yes!" --

"I don't have enough money…" --

"Just come back later, I trust you."

I swear… The darndest things happen in my life.

And all that kindness in my direction apparently came because the shop owner just loved my smile. He said it was beautiful. *laughs sheepishly* It seems that lots of people here are fond of my smile. It's all very interesting.

While chatting online with friends, I saw a lovely error message I'd never seen before...

(Which isn't loading now, but it basically said:

"Authentication Failure: You Are Not Allowed To Do that"

Ha ha ha!)

Also, randomly, who should show up briefly into the John Donne tonight, but Sasha!!!!

He was actually at the restaurant down below the JD (owned by the same people) -- but popped in just to say hi to Pete. I razzed him about not telling me he'd be here, and life continued on.

Besides more chatting with friends, that's been my night!

The only thing left is to post this, mail the new blogs to my Nana, and get home!

Much love,
