Today was a cooking day!!!!!
I learned about two different kinds of Russian, "Salads."
For the record, "Salads" in Russia, at least in my experience, are a bit heartier than their American counterparts.
For us, as I said, we made two different kinds: Vinagret, and Calamari Salad.
Vinagret:
Boiled: Potatoes, Carrots, Beets
Onion
1, small Pickle (No longer than my pinkie finger -- 1.5 in. ish)
1 small/medium can green peas
Salted Cabbage (Something they can buy here; but can also make at home)
Oil (Sunflower, in our case)
Salt
Pepper
Take all of the veggies except for the peas and the cabbage, and chop them into ITTY BITTY pieces; mix *everything* together; and that's it!
It's *DELICIOUS!!!* Waaaay healthy (Look at all the veggies!!!)!!! And it's a rather pretty red color, thanks to the beets. Another advantage? Everything's in such tiny pieces, you're not really sure what piece of what veggie you have while you're eating it; it all just blends nicely. So, maybe it's a plus for picky eaters, I dunno.
Calamari Salad:
Calamari -- Boiled, Cut into thin strips
Hard Boiled Eggs -- Also cut thin
Mayonnaise
Salt
Pepper
Combine everything -- add mayonnaise to taste/until it's all a nice consistency, I suppose. Flavor as you will.
Surprisingly, quite delicious! (And I didn't think I liked mayonnaise!)
It was a fun day, because I had been skeptical that I was going to like either salad, but thanks to Granddaddy's rule of, "You have to try everything once -- I don't care if you don't like it; you don't have to eat it again if you don't -- but you *will* try it," I found myself pleasantly surprised today!
After all of the cooking in the afternoon, we had some company for dinner -- some of the friends who had been by before -- and then I went out to my first club in Moscow, with some of the kids in our group.
We started out at a bar/restaurant -- as it turns out, it was Misha's birthday, so they bought him a drink. It was called something to the effect of, "Over the Moon," and I believe had 7 different kinds of liquor in it -- including absinthe! So, I've tried absinthe. Whoo. I still hate licorice.
From there, we went to Club Propaganda -- and danced/hung out until about 1:30 in the morning-ish, and thanks to our Russian friends who were with us (students from the university), we got taxi's home. Irony -- I went home with Misha and Jess, and ours was the first taxi called, but the last one to arrive!! Note -- waiting outside, for half an hour, in the cold, at 2 in the morning? Not fun.
But hey, we got home safe and sound, so, it was all good.
