Journal 53

3-17-2010; 11:10 PM

Happy St. Patrick's Day (I didn't wear any green though -- sorry! It was not a color that made it into my wardrobe here!)

It was Juan's birthday today!! (His 21st) -- So, yay! But I've fallen Sick… = @_@ = / = X_X =

Razvitie Rechi was pretty fun -- we spent at least half an hour learning how to wish Juan a happy birthday, in proper, Russian style! (Which is to say, with long, fanciful wishes to him!)

We also had that little vocabulary test -- which wasn't too bad for me, as I spent the time traveling to and from my Hustle Party (on the Metro) studying all of the words!! (See? I *am* doing homework here! Even when I'm going to dance!)

(I had to laugh to myself however, because Tamara Evgenevna left us to ourselves for 20 minutes or so to take the little test -- which says something to the degree of faith in the US honor system I think. We've been told quite a few times that cheating isn't thought of as nearly as much of a problem in Russia as it is in the US -- so I imagined that if we had been a Russian class, we'd all have been swapping answers the whole time our teacher was gone!!)

By the time Literature rolled around, however, my condition had definitely worsened, and so I was left to re-discover the fact that, reading aloud [in a foreign language -- which is already difficult to read aloud at this point--], when your throat hurts, and your nose (half of it, anyway) is trying to run just plain SUCKS. =>_<=

Things didn't improve much after Literature, when we ran into our Razvitie Rechi professor (Tamara Evgenevna) again in the stairwell on the way to dance. I was already a little fuzzy in the head by this time, and so when she said, "Katya, that's the second time that you haven't said hello to me today!" (Teasingly) I just looked at her, and was just crushed!! (I was sick, give me a break -- I always take things more literally when I'm sick, and tired…) I said, "I thought I said hello to you this morning in class -- I always do!!" So, in order to make up for it, I just started apologizing to her, and wishing her very well in her day -- except that, again, I was tired, and had only just learned how to say some of the things that I was wishing her this morning (in her class!), well, it probably went from being somewhat understandable to a downright mess. She paused, and looked at me, and said, "What's with you?" I just moaned, "I've fallen ill," about-faced, and kept going up the stairs… I was quite embarrassed, and, well, sick!

I felt at least ok in Dance, and I worked with the girls on their Spirals and the Aieda move that followed it -- so, at least there was a positive. A few of them thanked me afterwards, and Misha came up to me and asked, "Is there any chance you can help me NOT mess that up as badly as I just did?!" Ha ha ha. I felt just like I was back on the team, doing newcomer lessons again. =^__^= (Nothing against them -- it's just a fact that everyone in my school group are all newcomers to ballroom.)

Thankfully, not even being sick could keep me from enjoying the next part of the day!

Juan had brought cake to school to share with us, and because we were going to be going on an Excursion in the future that had to do with Russian Cartoons, Vika brought in two rather famous Russian cartoons/films to show us! So, how can you go wrong with Cake and Cartoons?!?!

-- I feel I should note, that in one of the Cheburashka movies, they were playing a song that Vika said every Russian knows, about birthdays (appropriate, because of Juan) -- about how, "Unfortunately, birthdays only come once a year!"

**********

I went straight home after the cartoons, where I just wanted to nap for an hour, eat, and then go to the John Donne -- but even though my host mum said, "OK" when I told her to wake me up, she didn't!!

So, I got up just before 10:30 PM, ate my dinner; and sent Pete an apology text, and here I am.

---[I am suddenly reminded about how Yitian could also never wake me up when we were rooming together, when I'd lie down to nap after asking her, "Please wake me up in half an hour." Ha ha ha!

Her train of thought went something like this, she told me after one such an occasion:

"'Okay, I'm gonna wake her up... 'Aww, she's so cute when she's sleeping!! I'll go do my makeup…' … 'Okay, gotta wake her up -- aww, she's so cute... I'll go do my hair...' ... 'I have to wake her -- she's so cute..... I can't do it!!'" ]---

I'd rather go to bed than do homework… But I'd hate to disappoint my teachers tomorrow… (I can't even conceive of NOT going to class!)

I suppose I'm going to figure it out now…
