Journal 14 - Russians Play Basketball and Why I Am Always Up So Late

Journal 14

9-9-10

The meeting at school passed quickly today; and I found out that we weren't having Russian-American Club this week. I was surprised, although I shouldn't have been -- it's only the first week in Russia for all the new kids. I tend not to think about that -- seeing as how I'm beginning my seventh month here in Moscow. (For anyone new to the game, or who forgot, I came to Moscow at the very end of January - and spent most of May, and a little over 2 weeks of August in the US. )

Because there was no Russian-American Club, however, I had the chance to make it to Liga Pap, to see Pete, and part of the US-Russia basketball game, before I left for dance practice!! Yes, Russia played the US in basketball. I was pretty excited about getting to watch the game. I must say, the Russians were pretty impressive at the start of it! I'm quite sure that the first 7-10 shots they made were all 3-pointers -- and they made them ALL. ... That of course, put the US at feeling like they had to make awesome 3-point shots, too -- and we were not always so successful. *laughs*

**********

I practiced, and then headed straight home. I got a lovely surprise, when I found out that one of my favorite cousins is now on Facebook -- so we have another way to connect, and it will now be possible for my Nana to see my photos from Russia, through my Cousin's profile.

While online, I Skype-ed with my family again, and as it was probably 2 or 3 AM at that point, one of my friends messaged me on Facebook: "Why are you always up so late?"

It's a fair question, and in response to everyone I know, who always wonder why I am up at un-Godly hours of the morning:

1. Dance practice goes from 8-10 PM.

2. The studio is located one hour and fifteen minutes from where I live. -- This does NOT include the time it takes to change before and after practice. -- Included, call my commute time an hour and thirty minutes, ONE-way.

3. Following that, if I stop practicing at 10:05 PM, and if I don't wait on people, or we don't stop in at a store before getting on the Metro -- I am going to walk in my door around 11:35 PM-- provided there are no delays on the Metro.

4. Now, here's the fun part. After walking in the door at 11:35 PM ish, I must decide what order to do the following in:

Shower (20-40 min)

Eat Dinner, Save Leftovers For Lunch, Do Dishes (10-40 min -- depending on how quickly I'm eating.)

Set Out/Hang up my Dance Things to dry (5-10 min -- depending on if I'm taking down other things, etc.)

Say that I take a 40 min shower, Eat (etc) in 25 min, and hang up my dance stuff in 5 -- it will now be 12:45 AM. It's already "tomorrow!"

But wait -- there's more!!!

5. After all *that* -- odds are, I still have to get my make-up off (Waterproof Mascara does not play nicely when it comes to removal) -- 10 min ; there will inevitably be some Random Puttering - 10-15 minutes; and I'll need to brush my teeth, etc - 10 minutes.

It's now somewhere around 1:20 AM.

6. THEN, I can get online, check my email; respond to email; call people in the US that need to be called [if needed]; check Facebook; inevitably look for some new songs/manage my music a little; catch up with friends who pop online (from the US); maybe do some homework, and work on my journal!!!!

All of that can take me until anywhere from 2 AM and beyond. Basically, Item 6 involves everything that I haven't had a chance to do during the day, because:

A. If I have school, I'm already carrying all of my school things, PLUS my dance things -- so I can just go straight to the Studio from School. I am NOT about to add in my laptop (the extra weigh) to that, if I can help it.

B. Because I don't go home in the middle of the day (it would be a waste of time), the only time I have to do all of those random little internet/computer-related things is after I get back from dance!

** Oh, and if it's Tuesday, or if I stop in to Liga Pap to visit… Take that schedule you just read, but push my "Walking In The Door" time back to 1:00 AM or so.

THAT is why I am always up so late.

PS - I don't get up earlier to do some of the Item 6 bits, because I'm trying to *sleep* as much as I can -- between all of those little things, and my own body's reluctance to sleep.

And now you know.

(10 Points to anyone who read that, and responded, "And Knowing is half the battle!")

Love,

Moscow Kitty
