Journal 100 - Macbeth and Gummi Worms!

Journal 100

Saturday - 12-4-10

I woke up with more or less the same symptoms as I had yesterday - sore throat, and sinuses gunked up to kingdom come -- but they dissipated rather quickly, and I felt that I would be able to go to practice just fine.

Unfortunately, when I got to the studio, I saw that the changing rooms were locked: never a good sign.

I proceeded up the stairs, just in case there was practice, but no one had a key for the changing rooms. As it turns out, there were three people in the hall -- but when I asked one of them, he said that there was no practice that day. (Not having seen any trainer, I can't tell you what they were doing there, but I just decided to roll with it, and left.)

I went to Prime on my way home -- I had promised to bring Pete some of the last of my chocolate-cherry-oatmeal cookies -- and hoped I was going to get to chat with him a little more than I'd been able to yesterday. This was not the case, unfortunately.

While we got to chat some (I found out that it was a year to the day that he had first arrived in Moscow!!), he was was still pretty busy -- although he'd heard tell that some of the Marines might have been coming by, so I broke out, "Macbeth" and kept reading.

About an hour or so later, Lich came in, and he sat down with me, and we started chatting.

[As he came up to me, and saw that I was reading, "Macbeth," I hastily put it away saying, "Yeah, it's probably not a good idea to receive a friend while reading a story all about betrayal and murder... Ha ha ha!!"]

*****

Back to the chatting -- It was a really great conversation!! He told me a great story illustrating the premise of why some people are Marines ("First to fight,") and why some people become Officers, ("Someone's gotta keep us outta trouble...!") and then shared a really awesome question with me, to ask people:

"If you could wake up anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would it be?"

That turned into a really awesome conversation for us, in and of itself. It can be a pretty telling response!

In case anyone is curious, this is what I told him:

"Huh... Anywhere in the world, huh? *laughing* Well, besides the obvious, "Here, for dancing!" ... ... ... I'd wake up in FL, with my Nana and my cousin. I'd be in my little piece of Heaven."

His girlfriend showed up sometime later, bringing with her a bag of gummi worms, and that led to the most important lesson of the day: how to properly eat a gummy worm.

You see, Lich's girlfriend and I came from the, "I usually bite the head off," school of thought -- but Lich... He has a more artful approach. He'll tie his gummi worms into knots -- 2 square knots, to be exact. That actually leaves you with a pretty artful-looking square of gumminess that is as tasty as it is beautiful!!

I wound up joking with him, after it became apparent that I had become hooked on tying my worms into knots --

"I can see it now... Many years in the future, I'm gonna be sitting somewhere, tying gummi worms into knots, and someone is going to come up to me.

'Why on *Earth* are you tying those gummi worms in knots?!'

And I'll look at them, and smile, and say, "You know? When I was younger, and living in Moscow, Russia, I met this Marine... He taught me to do it, and I've been eating my gummi worms that way ever since... ... Changed my life, man...""

We both agreed that not only was it hilarious, but just the thought that we were going to be able to say someday, "When I was younger, living in Moscow, Russia [with the Marines]..." was just some kind of Awesome.

[On a related note, the gummi worms also led to a discussion of our observations of the different color combinations that different companies use, as well as our preferences for or distain of certain combinations... Quote winner: "And that's *brown...* *Brown* is not a color that should be found in gummi worms..."]

I left around 11:30, as I was getting sleepy, and still wanted to get some dinner -- but I couldn't complain about the evening at all! "Macbeth," a great conversation with a good friend, and Gummi Worms?? How can it go wrong?!?

Love,

Moscow Kitty
